#11. Christmas 1972
Changing times...
Here I am opening presents on Christmas morning, wearing my brand new Realistic headphones and listening to The Best of The Guess Who. I was in Heaven.
We were almost two years living in my parents’ dream home out in the country. But, a downturn in my father’s industry saw his job (and pay) change. As a result, things started to get neglected.
Behind me, you can see a TV within a TV. Behind is a Clairtone, on a swivel, that my dad won when his grocery store took top sales in 1967. It was an amazing TV - our first ever in colour. Over the years of hard use, it had broken down. Rather than repair or replace it, they moved my parents’ TV into the living room and stuck it down in front “just for now”. And there it stayed.
This would be our last Christmas here. I didn’t know everything was about to change. My parents did however. They were feeling the pinch. And yet, they made sure I got those headphones and that record - and a whole bunch of other stuff…just like it was any other year.
Merry Christmas.
