#312. The Call
Pulling out the phone numbers that David had provided, I went down the list. One by one, I called and left a message with personal assistants saying my latest single was getting ‘strong airplay’ in New Zealand. I also mentioned, in passing, that I was currently nominated for Outstanding New Artist in RPM’s Big Country Awards...
Somebody’s sure to call me back.
And they did!
The same exec who had signed Bonita called to invite me down to his office for a chat. I was to bring tapes of whatever I was working on.
Perfect!
I had those Ron Dann demos and I was eager for someone of consequence to hear them. Other than that, I didn’t have much recorded - just some primitive home demos of guitar instrumentals and a bunch of early, rough, or unfinished songs.
After picking my strongest three tunes, I dubbed them onto the best cassette tape I could find: a Maxell Chrome 90. Now, this wasn’t a fresh tape. It contained some experimental guitar jams that I had abandoned, so I taped over them.
That evening, I called David to let him know that his help had just netted me a meeting with one of the majors, but he didn’t sound pleased. I thought he’d be happy.
